Site Specific

Each place in this world had its own story and it is related to someone's life! Places can have special significance: a home, the place where you study, the place where you were born, the garden where you used to walk... Place have also specific qualities: smell, colors, sensations, sounds! Every time you enter a place you can start a story! This is how we start exploring a new place in Ellen Terry building: find your own place, spend 20 minutes by observing it (sounds, colors, shapes), and then go to your journal and draw your observations.

Starting by scores like : dark, stillness, sound, silence, action, light, distance, try to create movement that express how it feels being into that space!

I found myself in the middle of four white walls, and my first feeling was the loneliness ( I was used to work in couples and this was the first time when we had to be alone). I was looking for ways to communicate with the outside: blowing through the doors, watching on the windows, making different noises, and also using one door as an imaginary partner! I found also the center of the little room in relation with the center of my body and I felt unusual being up side down! And I think this experience can be developed even further!

The White Ritual

Out daily lives mean coming in contact with different materials, some of them hurt us, others are soft, of fluid. How can we use those materials in a total different way? What can it be? Is it possible to tell a story or express ourselves by using our body movement and a piece of material?

Impressions

I was impressed by Florence's demonstration so I was really excited to find out how it feels to be inside of a huge sheet of paper! What a challenge!
My first sensation was the fear...I was suffocated, I couldn't breath anymore, so I needed to break the paper and to reconnect with the "outside world". Actually it's not just paper, what is inside of it represents an individual universe. It is an intimate space with a specific smell. I wasn't able to see anything around and I couldn't hear outside noises because of the strong noise inside of it! Where were all senses? They couldn't help me anymore...After a while I felt the paper like a second skin, a warm skin, that gave me a different shape. I wasn't me anymore! A transformation happened! I start improvising interesting movement with my new "skin" and I also create extravagant costumes for myself, just by using the paper. This is how a funny "paper fight" started! Afterwards we create our "heart" , the main organ that keeps us alive!
What an exhausting, but beautiful journey!!!

Questions About Myself

Today, 13 January 2011, Cecilia told us words that need to be always in a performer's mind :
  • EMPOWERMENT
  • PASSION
  • CELEBRATING THE INDIVIDUAL
  • INCLUSION
  • TRANSLATE
  • CREATIVE
  • FACILITATE
She also asked us to think about the following questions:
  1. What stops you? Why?
  2. What makes you different?
  3. What do you celebrate about your dance?
  4. What do you need to feed it?
  5. What stops you feeding your dance?
I keep thinking about all these questions, but I still don't have a complete answer...But soon I will try to explore myself to find some answers....because I'm really curious who I actually am!

Opening the senses

I just went back to my artist journal...and something just captivated my attention.
BEING AWARE OF OUR OWN SENSES!
Amy's voice makes us getting in a trance: close your eyes, feel the weight of the belly going down to the Earth, start moving the pelvis and let the eyes follow...
[I forgot who I was, I moved naturally, in my own space and rhythm]
This journey let us to open up all our senses: smell, hear, touch, taste, see.
During daily life we people don't realize how important the senses are! They are part of individuality!

Scores...28.10.2010

We start moving, I just respond to my "body voice", I just follow my inner, I also feel a great connection with the floor, today...I might fall in love with the floor!...at least the floor will never disappoint me! Never ever!...
So we think about words...and we try to express them. Jane and I choose interesting words, like:

  1. Follow
  2. Passion
  3. Voices
  4. You
  5. Slow
  6. Calm
  7. Free
I found interesting to observe how a human being can express words, even if they are not related one to each other! You can tell a story without a background....

The begining of a new "age"

This is the "cercle" of our first improvisation class...this is when we start connecting one to each other and create relationships, as a big family! First Year Dance-Coventry 2010. What a beautiful start!

What means improvisation?
  • Explore myself;
  • Finding my qualities and my goals;
  • Freedom;
  • Try to connect movement;
  • Discover a new process in my body and mind;
  • I can be what I never was...
  • Spontaneity- the quality of moving from natural feelings;
  • Intuition- instinctive knowing(without the use of rational process)

8 November 2010- D-TRACES Project

"How fresh, how calm,
 Stiller than this of course,
 The air was in the early morning,
 Like the flap of a wave;
 the kiss of a wave;
 Chill and sharp and yet..."

Choose two words and try to express them in all ways possible.

Improvise starting by this drawing and try to take it as far as it can go...

This is the map of our first class with Siobhan Davies artists, that show how we expand our body language starting by different scores: words, drawings.
